The VSS Unity space plane will be flown by Scaled Composites, the company founded by Branson’s friend and business partner, Burt Rutan, which designed and built the vehicle.
The test flight will be the first time that Unity has been pushed to its limits, flying higher and faster than it has before.
“The atmosphere is quite celebratory, but everyone is also very focused,” said George Whitesides, CEO of Virgin Galactic.
“This is a very important milestone for the company,” he added.
Virgin Galactic has been testing the VSS Unity for years, but the flight on Thursday will be the first time the plane has gone beyond the atmosphere.
The company plans to take passengers on suborbital flights, meaning they will travel high into the atmosphere before coming back down.
The flights will allow passengers to experience zero gravity and see the curvature of the Earth.
Tickets for the flights cost $250,000.
So far, over 700 people have booked tickets for the flights.
Virgin Galactic is not the only company offering space tourism flights.
